Gangotri Temple – The Sacred Origin of the Ganges

Located in the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,100 meters, Gangotri Temple is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in India. Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, it is an integral part of the Char Dham Yatra and marks the sacred origin of the River Ganga.

According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath meditated here to bring Ganga to Earth for the salvation of his ancestors. The river descends from the Gaumukh Glacier, about 19 km from the temple, as the Bhagirathi River, later merging with the Alaknanda to form the Ganga.

Built in the 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, the temple opens in April-May and remains accessible until October-November, after which the idol is shifted to Mukhba Village for the winter. The serene environment, towering peaks, and spiritual aura make it a must-visit for devotees and nature lovers alike.
