Yamunotri Temple – The Sacred Source of River Yamuna
Perched at an altitude of 3,293 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas, Yamunotri Temple is the revered source of the River Yamuna and an important part of the Char Dham Yatra. Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the temple is nestled amidst stunning snow-clad peaks and gushing streams, offering a deeply spiritual experience.
The temple was built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal, and according to Hindu mythology, Asit Muni, a revered sage, meditated here. Pilgrims take a 6 km trek from Janki Chatti to reach the temple, passing through breathtaking landscapes and hot water springs like Surya Kund, where devotees cook rice and potatoes as offerings to the goddess.
The temple is open from April-May to October-November, after which the idol is moved to Kharsali Village for winter worship. A visit to Yamunotri is not just a pilgrimage but also an experience of divine serenity and natural beauty.
